CavalierThe Scholastic Bowl team will practice on Mon., Nov. 19, 2018 immediately following school in room 126. This is due to the fact that our meet is on Tuesday next week. Practice will last one hour. Please plan to provide your own transportation or ride the 5:30 bus.

There is a CTE field trip for any ninth grade student on November 15. The trip is to the Hilton in Suffolk and includes a very nice sit-down lunch. Please see Mr. Strauss in room 117 or your English teacher for permission slips and information. Only the first 50 students that turn in the form can go. There are only 7 places left for this field trip!

Are you looking for scholarships? Do you need to work on getting more community service hours? Didn't make it to Guidance and need to know the quote of the week? Sign up for "Success Central," the Google classroom page for Guidance. Help us reach our goal of at least 100 participants. The 100th member to the page wins a prize. Winner will be announced November 13. Stop by the Guidance Dept. and get the code!

This November the Library Media Center will be running a book drive. Please donate gently used or new books in the red drop-off box in the Library. The Library is also celebrating International Games week November 5-9. Come by and try your hand at board games, video games, break-out boxes, book bingo and puzzles. Earn candy for completing games.

Juniors and Seniors - LWs Lawn Service and MWM Property Management and Investments will be hosting their annual turkey give-away, Sat., Nov. 17. They are looking for five Juniors and/or Seniors from each of the area high schools to volunteer their time for this worthy cause. This will take place:

Date/time: Sat., Nov. 17, 9a-4p
Volunteers need to arrive at 8:00a for assignments and instructions. Dress appropriately for the weather as most will be working outside. Students are welcome to either work until 1:00p or stay until 4:00p. Please see your school counselor if your are interested as this is a first come, first serve opportunity.

The Ladies of Distinction are sponsoring a Coat and Hat Drive for the surrounding Suffolk community. Accepting all sizes of clean gently used and new winter coats, hats, scarves and mittens. These items will be distributed to some of our neediest families. Collection will be Nov. 2-20, 2018. Drop off times: Before and after school in Room 232 (Ms. Snead).

ASVAB sign-ups are now available on the Lakeland website and in the Library. Students must click the blue link to register. Students must register by Thurs., Nov. 15. Only students in grades 10-12 will be allowed to test.

The character development trait for November is RESPONSIBILITY. Responsible students honor their commitments - to others and to themselves. They succeed in school by doing their assignments well and on time. They do their share of group projects. They go to practices, tutoring and meetings consistently. Teachers, please send nominations for responsible students to the Library Media Center staff. Those nominees will be able to choose a prize at the end of the month.

The GearUp field trip to Virginia State University and Virginia Commonweath University is Wed., Nov. 14, 2018. Please be at the school by 6:00am! We will return to the school around 6:00 in the evening. Please make arrangements ahead of time for someone to pick you up.

Writing results from October are back. Students who tested may stop by Guidance to see Mrs. Spruill.

The marching band will rehearse today, Nov. 13, 3:15 - 7:00p.

The ASL club will meet Tues., Nov. 13 after school at 3:10.

Lakeland High School will participate in an Advanced Performance Accreditation Review on February 19, 2019. "The review process examines the whole institution - the programs, the culture context, the community of stakeholders - to determine how well the parts work togeether to meet the needs of students."
In preparation for the performance accreditation review, faculty & students will be asked to complete surveys via email in the coming weeks. The completed surveys will provide data needed for the review team visiting "The Home of the Cavaliers" in February. Additional information will be shared as preparations are underway.

Seniors - Lakeland will be participating in it's first Virginia College Application Week. This week is designed to assist students with the application process and possibly submit their application for free! This will take place Nov. 13 - Nov. 15. You will be taking advantage of this opportunity during your Government block today or tomorrow, Nov. 14 in Lab 161. Lakeland's Counselors and the Access Advisor will be on hand to assist. Please check your school email for a student profile which will be helpful when completing your applications. Seniors, please take advantage of this great opportunity to submit your college applications.
